Belton TX Community Info and Homes For Sale
Deep in the heart of Texas, there’s a city brimming with friendly people and a rich history called Belton. The county seat of Bell County, Belton sits on the famous Chisholm Trail, home to more than 14,000 people who love their town! Among their famous buildings are The Bell County Museum, funded by the Carnegie Foundation as well as two major lakes to enjoy, Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lake and BLORA (Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area) open to the public to come and spend a day near the water and have a blast.
The new pioneer town of Belton was laid out in blocks, streets and lots around the courthouse public square in 1850 by its founders. Designated the county seat for the newly formed Bell County, Belton was incorporated in 1852 and the only town in the county and was the last civilization settlers would see heading West by wagon train or horseback. In 1853, a two story log jail was built and soon after, a school, hotel, church, saloons and stores followed. Originally log buildings or pole shacks, a new surge of people came and built more permanent structures. Some of them, like the A.D. Potts building, built in the 1860’s still stand today and still owned by the Potts family. The 1870’s brought with it a boom to Belton, along with new buildings and new businesses.
A Belton group organized the first telegraph company that provided daily quotes of the cotton market, crucial to an area where cotton was king. Belton ran into its first setback in 1881, having paid the Santa Fe railroad representatives, then finding that it had been tricked out of a railroad. They sued and won and Belton soon became a modern town with a water system, electricity and telephones, a fire department and more. There was also a brand new college that began as Baylor Female College, now the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. Belton has a rich and fascinating history.
